Iran newspapers praise Rushdie’s attacker

A number of hardline Iranian newspapers have poured reward on the one who attacked and critically wounded writer Salman Rushdie, whose novel The Satanic Verses had drawn loss of life threats from Iran since 1989.

There was no official response but in Iran to the assault on Rushdie, who was stabbed within the neck and torso on Friday whereas onstage at a lecture in New York state.

Nonetheless, the hardline Kayhan newspaper, whose editor-in-chief is appointed by Iran’s Supreme Chief Ali Khamenei, wrote:

“A thousand bravos … to the courageous and dutiful one who attacked the apostate and evil Salman Rushdie in New York,” including, “The hand of the person who tore the neck of God’s enemy should be kissed”.
